E-ZPass Group and PayByCar Announce Expansion of Non-Toll Mobile Payment Program
Coming Soon Across the 19-State E-ZPass Group Network
NEWARK, Del. (July 30, 2024) – The E-ZPass Interagency Group (IAG) and PayByCar, Inc., the mobile payments startup responsible for providing pay-by-text payments at gas stations and parking facilities, have announced today the expansion of the “Driven by E-ZPass”™ non-toll payment program across the 19-state E-ZPass Group network.
E-ZPass, the world’s largest and most widely integrated toll network, and PayByCar® will provide the service to the drivers of nearly 55 million vehicles with E-ZPass tags and transponders with a low-touch mobile payment solution across multiple states in North America.
The “Driven by E-ZPass” non-toll program has been in a pilot developed by PayByCar and launched in 2022 across 27 gas stations in Massachusetts. Over the next two years, PayByCar will roll the service out to several hundred gas stations across several states. In addition, the service has been extended to a growing list of off-street parking facilities in multiple states including New York, Maryland, and Georgia.
The tag is used for on-arrival vehicle identification only. Parking fees and gas purchases are charged to whatever payment card or wallet the member provides when signing up for the service and are not charged to a user’s toll account.
“The E-ZPass Group is pleased to announce the expansion of the ‘Driven by E-ZPass’ program which will enable drivers of nearly 55 million vehicles with E-ZPass tags to perform mobile payment transactions beyond tolling,” said PJ Wilkins, Executive Director at E-ZPass Group and IAG Service Corporation. “We think it’s appropriate that the E-ZPass tag, the original in-vehicle payment solution, should also be useful for non-toll payments like fuel and parking,” Wilkins added.
PayByCar, the mobile payments company responsible for leading this initiative, allows customers with an E-ZPass transponder to perform contactless payments for gas and off-street parking garages without ever having to touch the pump screen or use cash, credit cards, or mobile apps, is currently available in at least four states.
At gas stations, PayByCar users simply pay by confirming a text message when they drive into a participating location, without ever having to open their wallet or touch the keypad to enter sensitive PINS on the fuel dispenser. In addition to eliminating multiple points of touching a public surface, the process also cuts transaction time in half and automatically provides a digital receipt directly to the user’s phone.
In parking, PayByCar recognizes the member’s vehicles upon arrival, automatically opening the gate without the need for a paper ticket. After entry, members can receive automatic text reminders (for example, a link to “check your flight status” at airport parking facilities). Upon exit, PayByCar automatically opens the gate without the need for inserting a ticket. The receipt, as in fuel, is digitally provided to the member’s phone.
“The drivers of 55M vehicles with E-ZPass tags already know how seamless paying for tolls is. We are determined to bring that simplicity to all the other payments made on the go,” said Kevin Condon, Founder and CEO at PayByCar, Inc. “We are also drivers so we know how frustrating it can be downloading multiple apps and wallets and then searching for them when you need to make a quick purchase, managing paper receipts, losing tickets in parking garages, or risking identity theft from transactions where card skimming results in millions of dollars in losses each year,” Condon added.
The E-ZPass states include Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, West Virginia, and Georgia.
